For around 3,000 years, Chinese medicine has used reflexology to re-balance the body’s Qi, or life-force, helping to treat a number of problems such as digestive disorders, insomnia, respiratory conditions and depression.
Nowadays, reflexology is often used alongside conventional western medicine to promote healing and improve wellbeing and vitality.
This gentle, non-invasive therapy is based on the theory that certain areas of the feet contain thousands of nerve endings which correspond to other parts of the body.
By massaging these reflex points, a trained practitioner can identify and clear blockages in the corresponding area of the body: for example, your therapist may massage your big toe and ankle to help alleviate the effects of PMS or menopausal symptoms.
You may need a series of treatments to treat specific conditions, but positive benefits are often felt after just one session.
At Urban Calm, we specialise in the Sorensensistem™ facial reflexology technique. It works through gentle stimulation of pressure points and energy lines, on the face, which correspond to the body’s digestive, nervous and hormonal system.
Each treatment is deeply relaxing and rebalancing, and is particularly beneficial in treating conditions such as headaches, sleeping difficulties, digestive complaints and stress. Because it helps to reduce muscular tension that’s held in the face, it stimulates the circulation and encourages a softer, more glowing complexion, providing cosmetic as well as health benefits.
The Sorensensistem™ facial reflexology technique has been developed the past 30 years by Danish reflexologist Lone Sorensen, the system combines traditional Eastern methods with the study of modern neurology of the face and central nervous system. Your therapist will assess your facial maps and design a reflexology plan especially for you, combining the use of acupressure and a deep reflexology massage of the face. A typical treatment is approximately 50 minutes’ duration, but if required, the treatment can be extended by incorporating additional facial massage techniques in consultation with your therapist.
